A Dacorum resident is celebrating after winning an electric bike in a special prize draw held by Hemel Garden Communities. The competition was open to those who completed the Hemel Garden Communities Vision Survey and shared their views on the future transformation of the town and local area.

The lucky winner was Frank Boase and the prize of an e-bike proved particularly apt as Frank is a volunteer with The Bike Project at homeless charity DENS, based in Hemel Hempstead. The project gives DENS clients and other vulnerable or socially excluded adults, the chance to learn new skills refurbishing bikes. Frank said, ‘I was very surprised and pleased to hear I’d won the prize draw. I spend a lot of time doing up bikes with the DENS project, so to win a new electric bike is fantastic. I’m looking forward to taking it out and about!”

Hemel Garden Communities Programme Director, Phillipa Zieba, presented Frank with his prize. She commented, “We’re delighted that Frank has won an e-bike in our Vision Survey Prize Draw and are grateful to everyone who took the time to share their feedback. Encouraging active travel is a key focus for the Hemel Garden Communities Programme, as we develop a more sustainable approach to transport across the town into the future. We’re already funding the improvement of cycle routes in the local area and we hope that Frank can now enjoy them in style.”

The Hemel Garden Communities Vision Survey ran between October and December. More than 1,300 people took part and they were asked if they supported the Garden Town aims, which include providing more affordable, well-designed and energy-efficient, new homes; a safe town-wide travel network; and creating a more vibrant town centre to attract new investment. Each of the principles received overwhelming support of 90% or above, with people listing priorities such as better public transport links and more green open spaces and parks.
